Challenge
How can a company strengthen its CDP disclosures?
Climate action and comprehensive climate disclosures go hand in hand. After all, businesses must be able to track and communicate their climate progress to investors and clients. Organisations turn to CDP to disclose their climate impacts, including Dynapack Asia.
Since 2016, the designer and manufacturer of bottles, closures and other customised packaging solutions has been disclosing through CDP. Ahead of its next submission, Dynapack Asia had already captured its direct and energy-related carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2). But with data sets from 26 manufacturing sites, it wanted to make sure its calculation methods were accurate, and any inconsistencies cleared up. With a verified footprint in line with ISO standards, Dynapack Asia hoped to form the footing for future climate action.
CDP reporting
The CDP (formerly ‘Carbon Disclosure Project’) is a global disclosure system that helps investors, businesses, cities, and regions to manage their environmental impact. It provides a snapshot of an organisation's environmental performance.
As part of the score, the CDP encourages corporate businesses to verify their footprints against ISO standards.
Solution
Bolstered carbon disclosures with ISO assurance
Deviations in carbon footprint calculations may arise when the data derives from multiple locations. In this instance, Dynapack Asia extracted footprint data from 26 different manufacturing sites across Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and China, as well as two offices and one R&D site. To verify Dynapack Asia's calculation methods, we:
Reviewed the methods with which Dynapack Asia collects and checks its data to understand the company's process.
Audited Dynapack Asia’s Scope 1 and 2 calculations in accordance with ISO 14064. This included a dedicated site visit to its Singapore site where we verified the company’s data sources, e.g., meter readings, invoices, purchased fuel consumption records, expenses, F-gas logs.
Explored ways in which Dynapack Asia can optimise its data collection process. Examples include smart metering, maintenance of refrigerant logbooks, vendor invoice requests, or the introduction of a quality check system that validates greenhouse gas emission factors.
Pinpointed any inaccuracies and inconsistencies for Dynapack Asia to iron out before it could achieve its verified footprint and publicly report credible Scope 1 and 2 footprints.
Impact
The footing for more ambitious climate action
This assurance proves Dynapack Asia's greenhouse gas statement meets ISO standards. Such verifications support CDP submissions and — more importantly — refine footprints and sharpen a company's carbon measurement process. Following this assurance, Dynapack Asia was able to:
Obtain a B score from the CDP, which indicates 'environmental management'. ISO verification plays a role in this score, enriching the manufacturer's sustainability reputation.
Improve data quality for footprint measurement. Dynapack Asia has implemented new measures to better collect and share data on an international level.
Uncover the hotspots within its Scope 1 and 2 emissions and concentrate its climate efforts where it can have the most impact. The footprinting exercise revealed that electricity consumption for example fuels over 90% of the organisational footprint.
Raise its climate ambitions. As confidence in its operational footprint grew, so did its climate ambitions: Dynapack Asia felt empowered to proceed to the next step of its sustainability journey, which will involve measuring its value chain footprint and setting science-based targets.
We really appreciated the Carbon Trust’s support throughout this verification process. Their guidance on Scope 1 and 2 emissions helped us to correct our calculations, so we can better align our emissions reductions to the Science Based Targets initiative. We now have the confidence to share our numbers internally and externally thanks to this valuable process.
